A new era - Manulife Pooled Registered Pension Plan receives federal approval

A new era in workplace savings in Canada began on September 26 when Manulife’s Pooled Registered Pension Plan (PRPP) product was approved by the Canada Revenue Agency and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions for sale to federally regulated companies. As of October 1, Manulife’s federal PRPP workplace savings program can be purchased by federally regulated industries and employers or self-employed individuals based in Yukon, Nunavut, or Northwest Territories.

Federal minister advocates for PRPPs to be introduced in every province

Canada’s Minister of State (Finance) Kevin Sorenson gave Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPP) a ringing endorsement recently, indicating his belief that PRPPs would significantly help small-business owners in this country, as well as their employees who don't currently have access to workplace savings plans.
Minister Sorenson’s position on PRPPs is a clear sign that there is great political appetite to see the plan implemented in every province and provide millions of hard-wording Canadians access to a means to save for their retirement.

Report shows Ontario employers favour Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs)

In its recently released report, An Employer Perspective on Fixing Ontario’s Pension Problem, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Certified General Accountants of Ontario outlined several significant reasons Ontario employers favour introducing Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs) over expanding the government-run Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or introducing a new, government-run provincial program called the Ontario Pension Plan (OPP).
According to the report – a synopsis of the findings of a province-wide survey and several focus groups – there are several reasons why an expanded CPP or a new OPP are not in Ontario’s best interests.

PRPP progress felt in several provinces

The push for Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs) is picking up across the country. A number of provinces have either passed or are on their way to passing legislation that will see this brand-new, low-cost workplace savings plan, designed especially for small to medium-sized businesses, come into effect.
